Bear safe this Summer!

Okaya City is surrounded by many beautiful mountains. However, bears have recently been coming down from the mountains and are sometimes spotted near residential areas. Bears are extremely strong; being attacked by one can lead to severe injury or death.

Please read the following guidelines carefully to keep yourself safe.

Rules to Avoid Encountering Bears

1. Make noise while walking

When going near mountains, rivers, or heavily wooded areas, attach a bear bell to your bag or play music/news on a radio. Bears have keen hearing, so when they hear human noises, they will usually run away on their own.

2. Do not leave potential bear food outside

Do not leave trash or leftover food outside your home. Harvest any fruits in your garden (such as persimmons or apples) as soon as they ripen. The scent of food attracts bears.

3. Be especially careful in the morning and evening

Bears are most active when it is dark outside (early mornings and late nights). Please be extra vigilant if you walk near the mountains during these hours.

What to Do If You Encounter a Bear

  • If the bear is far away:
    • Quietly move away from the area.
    • Do not scream or run away suddenly. This may startle the bear and provoke an attack.
  • If the bear is close to you:
    • Never run away. Bears naturally chase things that run, and they can run almost as fast as a car.
    • Keep your eyes on the bear and slowly back away.
  • If you are attacked by a bear
    • Immediately lie face down on the ground (stomach down).
    • Cover the back of your neck with both hands to protect your head and abdomen.

📞 If You Spot a Bear

If you see a bear or find bear footprints, please report it immediately to the police (110) or to Okaya City Hall.

If you ever need help or advice regarding daily life, please feel free to reach out to the International Center anytime.
