Ensure your safety first

If you feel shaking or think an earthquake has started, protect yourself immediately. Take cover under a table or desk, or use a futon or cushion to shield your head. The most important thing is to protect yourself first.

If you’re outside, cover your head with a bag or other item, and move away from block walls, utility poles, and power lines.

If you’re cooking

Even in a small earthquake, always turn off any gas stoves right away. Of course, earthquakes are scary, but the fires they can cause are just as dangerous. However, if the shaking is strong enough that you can’t move safely, the kitchen can be very dangerous. In that case, prioritize protecting yourself and getting away safely. Once it’s safe to move, turn off the gas at the main valve and unplug electric appliances. In the case of a major earthquake where you must evacuate, turn off the circuit breaker before leaving your home.

Open Doors and Windows

In a large earthquake, doors may become jammed and unable to be opened. Try to open doors and windows early so you don’t get trapped inside.

Put on Shoes

Items in the kitchen or glass from windows may break and scatter. If you have time, put on shoes or slippers to protect your feet.

If you Need to Evacuate

Wear a hat or helmet, and carry your emergency supplies in a backpack so your hands are free.

During a disaster, radio is one of the most reliable sources of information. Make sure you have a radio prepared in advance.
